   About the road

The Roman Road Via Egnatia was the first Roman road built outside of Rome, the road that connected Rome with the newly conquered territories in the East. It was stated to be built by the Roman Proconsular Governor Gnaeus Egnatius, thus the name Via Egnatia. The construction begun in 146 BC and ended in 120 BC. It was first built from the Adriatic sea to the city of Thessalonica by Egnatius, and later continued onwards to Constantinopolis.
